Women's Day

"Ladkion ke zada chul machti hai" "Ladkian bas shakal dikha ke pass ho jati hain." "Tum to ladki ho, gynaecologist hi banogi." "Are wo dekh kya pehen ke ai hai." "Sabko ghumati hai wo." "Feminist hai na sali." "Medical holi sunao."

Everytime when we discuss the hardships women go through every day of their lives, we tend to presume that it's mostly the lesser educated section of the society. Or when it comes to the educated class, it's mostly their safety that concerns us. As if the only thing wrong with the society is the ideology of people we don't know and there's nothing wrong in and around us.

These statements that I've listed above, these are just few of the countless misogynistic statements I've heard from the medical fraternity in the last 5 years. Why is such ideology perpetuated year after year, batch after batch? Are women responsible for it? No. It's us men and only us. Feminism has widely been regarded as a female's ideology when in reality, it should be there in all of us. Why can't medical students and doctors unlearn the misogyny that's taught to us? Everything is possible if there is a collective will.

As I wish Women's day to the amazing women I know, I can't help lamenting my own role in this horrible cycle. Everytime those statements were said infront of me, I had the choice to speak up and oppose the person. But I didn't. It's irrelevant if I didn't want to engage in an argument. By staying silent, I chose the side of the oppressor. I am a different person now. Never again, shall I stay silent when any kind of injustice or discrimination would happen to the women on this planet. I urge all men to do the same. Work on yourself first.
